At the conclusion of this activity participants will be able to: 1) report that an important determinant of disease following Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) lung infection is pulmonary inflammation mediated by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs);  2) recall that despite the presence of vaccines and antibiotic therapies, invasive Streptococcus pneumonia (pneumococcus) infections, such as pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis, remain a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and 3) repeat that the host factors that     influence the outcome of S. pneumoniae infection will allow us to design better therapies.
