    • Liz Moses, PhD Candidate/Spira Lab presented her research “Molecular Impact of Electronic Cigarette Exposure on Bronchial Airway Epithelium” in an oral presentation at the NIH Tobacco Regulatory Science Conference in Bethesda, MD, May 16-18
    • Caitlin Miller, PhD Candidate/Gummuluru Lab spoke about her research in an oral presentation May 23rd-28th at the Cold Spring Harbor Conference on Retroviruses in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. The title of the talk is, “Vpr enhances HIV-1 infection of dendritic cells by alleviating a post-integration block to virus replication”
    • Stephanie Adams,  OD/PhD Candidate/Delalle Lab was selected to give a platform presentation of the following work at the 92nd Annual 2016 AANP (American Association of Neuropathologists) Meeting in June, in Baltimore, MD: Adams S, Tilton K, Kozubek J, Seshadri S, and I Delalle: “Protein Expression of Low Hippocampal Volume Risk Allele Candidates MSRB3 and LEMD3 in Human CA1 Region During Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease”
    • Barb Nikolajczyk, PhD has had a busy month:
      • She hosted The Obesity Society Guest Symposium at the American Association of Immunologists meeting May 13-17 in Seattle, WA.  The symposium was entitled “Inflammation Fuels Obesity-Associated Cancers”
      • Nikolajczyk was an invited Speaker at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, “Defining Inflammation in Human Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes”
      • Barb Nikolajczyk, along with Dr. Lee Wetzler, also successfully organized the BU Inflammation Symposium May 23, held in Bakst Auditorium.  The Symposium, which we hope to be an annual event, included speakers from the Boston area and beyond. The attendance of over 90 participants represented multiple Boston academic institutions and indicated the broad interest in the topic. Sponsors included Thermofisher, Corning, The Training Program in Inflammatory Disorders, The Division of Graduate Medical Sciences, The Dept. of Microbiology, The Evans Foundation ARC Program, and the Sections of Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases and Nephrology in the Dept. of Medicine
      • Hot Off the Presses: Barb Nikolajczyk’s R01 application “Roles for lymphocyte RANKL in periodontal complications of type 2 diabetes” has been approved for funding by the NIDCR
    • Boston Medical Center has released a video to emphasize that some aspects of our care are excellent but that there are still areas of improvement.
      • One portion of the video talks about pathology and the substantial impact of a timely report on the patient. Pathology did a quality improvement project to identify ways to decrease the amount of time necessary to render an accurate diagnosis on breast specimens. While this was a team effort, Charline Mack, David Kindelberger and Mike O’Brien deserve special recognition for their work and initiative on the project.

      • A BU Undergraduate student, Rebecca Zeng, is working with our Pathology PhD Candidate, Mark Wojnarowicz, the Goldstein Lab through the UROP program for the summer
      • The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine welcomes Brandon Hayse, 1styear medical student at BUSM, as our first fellow in our Summer Clerkship Fellowship in Pathology. Brandon will be rotating with us from May 23rd through July 15th 2016

      • Anna Macklin is a first year undergraduate student majoring in Biological Sciences at the University of Exeter, UK.  Anna will be working with Gail Whitney assisting on a grant while she is here.
      • Erika Banuelos, a sophomore year at Brown University, will be working with Dr. John Kim in the Remick Lab. She is a STaRS (Summer Training Research Scholar): http://www.bumc.bu.edu/gms/admissions/stars/) summer research program student.
      • Ivana Dellala’s Lab will have a student from Cornell (Biological Sciences ’19), Anant Sriram teaming with Stephanie Adams, Pathology OD/PhD Candidate
      • A New Summer Student is joining Maria Panchenko’ s Lab. Justin Cho is currently a junior at Williams College, MA. He was awarded an NIH grant to pursue undergraduate research and is interested in the field of cell cycle regulation.
      • Also in the Panchenko Lab is Bo Shao is a graduate student from Northeastern University. He will be getting his masters in pharmacology degree while continuing to investigate mechanisms of cytokinesis.
      • Please welcome Ksenia (Casey) Arakcheeva, a research technician who has joined the Winandy Lab
    • Nancy S. Miller, M.D. has been selected as a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). The ASM Distinguished Lecturer Program annually selects speakers for a 2-year term to lecture at ASM Branch meetings throughout the country.
    • Dr. Miller has also been accepted to be a Contributor to the Document Development Committee on Quality Management Systems, CLSI QMS01, for the international Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute
