At the conclusion of this activity participants will be able to: 1) recall that the clearance of apoptotic cells is arguably one of the most important processes of the immune system and is necessary for the homeostatic maintenance of healthy tissues and removal of infected or damaged cells; 2) report that defective clearance of apoptotic cells can lead to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus; and 3) discuss that there are new insights into the regulatory pathways that control Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) signaling to prevent loss of tolerance and the development of autoimmunity.
