Announcements:

  • LAB WEEK was April 20-24 this year, the theme was “was “Not all Heroes Wear Capes, Some Wear Lab Coats!” Events for the week included: a scavenger hunt, door decorating contest, which Chemistry won, for a departmental pizza party, we had games, and we collected $213 for the Cancer Center by allowing employees to wear jeans. We also handed out tumblers as lab week gifts

  • Huihong Xu was invited to give a cytology lecture “GI Interesting Cytology Cases” for the pathology residents at Brigham & Women’s Hospital on May 12th, 2015.
  • Congratulations; Lee Quinton has been promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
  • Last year Mostafa Belghasem, PhD candidate taught PS701 Immunology/Pathology lectures; these lectures were well-received by the Physician Assistance students and accordingly, he has been invited by the course directors to teach this year as well
  • Carmen D. Sarita –Reyes attended, as a member, the National Board of Dental Examiners Microbiology-Pathology Test Construction Committee Meeting  from May 11th – 15th 2015 in Chicago, Illinois
  • Debbie Stearns-Kurosawa, PhD was an invited featured speaker at the 2015 American Society for Apheresis Annual Conference May 6 – 9 in San Antonio, Texas.  Her talk was entitled: The Pathophysiology of E.coli-Mediated Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
  • Mostafa Belghasem, PhD candidate was invited by the Boston University Renal Section to talk about his thesis work. The lecture Mostafa presented was: Pathological and Molecular Profiling in Hypertension-induced Glomerular Injury on April 30, 2015
  • A collaborative project between the Kurosawa Lab and Drs. Monica Schaller and Johanna Kremer Hovinga from the University Clinic of Hematology, Central Hematology Laboratory and Department of Clinical Research, University Hospital Berne, Berne, Switzerland was accepted as a poster presentation for the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) meeting in Toronto, Canada (June 20-25).  The abstract is entitled:  ANTI-IDIOTYPIC DARPINS RESTORE ADAMTS13 ACTIVITY IN BABOONS CHALLENGED WITH HUMAN MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES: FIRST STEP TOWARDS AN ANIMAL MODEL FOR HUMAN ACQUIRED TTP
  • Dave Sherr, PhD and his Lab has received yet another $50k from Avon for breast cancer
  • BRAVO is in order:
    • Chris Andry has been reappointed as Chair of Boston University’s Safety Committee
    • Abigail Brown has been reappointed as a Voting Member of Boston University’s Safety Committee
    • Shinichiro Kurosawa has been reappointed as a Voting Member of Boston University’s Safety Committee
    • Liz Duffy has been newly appointed as a Voting Member of Boston University’s Safety Committee
