Grading

Each EOTYA case represents one of the required third year clinical clerkships, but the majority of students have not yet completed all of them by the time they take the EOTYA. Therfore students receive a summative grade in each of four skill areas: Interview, Physical Examination, Communication Skills, and Write-up.

For grading purposes a minimum passing level is identified for each skill area. This level is set at two standard deviations below the class mean.

Students with scores above the minimum passing level on all sections of the EOTYA are defined as having “Met the BUSM Standard of Clinical Competence”.

Students who have difficulty with only one skill area are definded as having “Marginally Met the BUSM Standard of Clinical Competence”, but will be informed of the area of deficiency and invited to review their materials.

Students are defined as having “Not met the BUSM standard of clinical competence” if they receive a score less than the minimum passing level on two or more skill areas of the EOTYA. Those students are required to review their test materials and to retake the examination (see below).

Upon completion of the EOTYA grades will be forwarded to the Registrar for inclusion in a student’s record, and will appear on the transcript. Two grades are possible:

“Met the BUSM Standard of Clinical Competence”
“Did not meet the BUSM Standard of Clinical Competence”
Retaking the Exam

Those students who “Marginally Met” the standard will have a grade of “Met” the standard recorded on their transcripts.

All students who receive a grade of “Did not meet the BUSM Standard of Clinical Competence” must retake the examination before their Dean’s letter can be sent. Students who need to retake the EOTYA will be required to review all records of their performance with an appropriate faculty member and receive feedback before retaking the examination. Any student who does not perform well on the second attempt will be referred to the 3rd and 4th Year Promotions Committee.
