Research Interest
My research interests are focussed on understanding the biochemical and physiological mechanisms of male erectile function and female genital sexual arousal function. Understandng the pathophysiology of these disorders will be very important to developing new innovative strategies to treat patients with such disorders. To achieve our objective, we have developed a multidisciplinary approach to study the role of neurotransmitters and vasoactive agents and their cognate receptors in modulating penile corpus avernosum trabecular smooth muscle tone and erectile function and the vaginal muscularis and its role in regulating the hemodynmaics of vaginal and clitoral tissue. These experimental approach utilizes pharmacological, physiological and biochemical methods to better understand how tissue structure and the signal transduction mechanisms are integrated to modulate corpus cavernosum smooth muscle tone and vaginal and clitoral smooth muscle contractility. Our objective is to understand the mechanisms underlying male erectile function and female genital arousal functcion to develop pharmacological agents for potential treatment of sexual dysfunction.
