Note to the user: Please read through this guide prior to setting up your PPP connection. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the PPP setup, please contact our HelpDesk (bumchelp@bu.edu or 617-638-5914)
Prerequisites:
- Have an established BUMC account
- Have an established BU/ACS account
- Have a working phone modem
- Download the following file: bupppXP.scp (save it to your Desktop)
Step 1: Add the Dial-Up Networking Folder to Windows

Click on Start and select Settings. Open the Control Panel folder and double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
This will bring up a dialog box. In this dialog box, select the Windows Setup tab. Highlight Communications and click on the Details button.

Make sure Dial-Up Networking is selected.

Click on the OK button, and then click the OK button again to make Windows ME install this component. (At this point, you may be prompted to insert your Windows ME installation disks or CDROM.) It will add the Dial-Up Adapter to your Network control panel. Windows ME will inform you that you need to restart your computer once you are done installing Dial Up networking. Once Dial Up Networking has been installed, simply close the control panel and click on Start, Shutdown, Restart Computer.
Step 2: Add the TCP/IP Protocol to Your Network Control Panel
Go back to the Control Panel, and double-click on the Network icon. This will bring up a dialog box listing the different networking protocols and adapters installed on your computer. (You should see “Dial-Up Adapter” as one of the items in this list.) Click on the Add button to add a new networking protocol. This will bring up a dialog box titled “Select Network Component”.
Double-click on Protocol. This will bring up a dialog with two list boxes asking you which protocol to add.

From the list on the left, select Microsoft, and on the right, select TCP/IP. Click the OK button to continue.
Step 3: Bind the Dial-Up Adapter to Use Only TCP/IP

While still in the Network control panel, click once on the item labeled Dial-Up Adapter, and then click on the Properties button.
This will bring up the Properties dialog box for “Dial-Up Adapter”. Select the Bindings tab, and make sure that only the box next to TCP/IP is checked. Click on the OK button for this dialog box, then click on the OK button for the Network dialog box.
(Once again, you may be prompted to insert your Windows ME disks or CDROM.)
A dialog box will pop up asking you if you want to restart your computer in order for these changes to take place. Click Yes to go ahead and restart your computer.
Step 4: Create a Dial-Up Networking Icon for Boston University
Click on Start and select Settings. Then open Dial-Up Networking.
The first time you open this folder, Windows ME will assume that you want to create a new Dial-Up Networking icon. This will pop up a dialog box labeled “Welcome to Dial-Up Networking” that will prompt you through the process of creating an icon for PPP connections to the Boston University campus network.

(If you need to do this again, you can double-click on the “Make a New Connection” icon to create another PPP icon.)

In the “Make a new connection” dialog box, change the name to BU PPP and make sure you have the correct modem selected. (If you don’t have a modem set up for use with Windows ME, an additional dialog box will pop up to guide you through the process of setting up your modem. When you’re done setting up your modem with Windows ME, read on.)
Click on the Next button. The dialog box will change to allow you to enter the telephone number to dial.

If you’re dialing in from off-campus, then you should be using the phone number 617-378-1111. If you’re dialing in from a B.U. Medical Campus phone line you should use the phone number 9,617-378-1111. If you have call-waiting and you want to disable it while you’re connected to BU, you can add *70, (that’s an asterisk, a numeral seven, a zero and a comma) in front of the phone number. Click on the Next button.

After some time a box will prompt you for your username, password and domain. This dialog box is to log you onto the BUMC computer system. Enter your username, password and bumc in the “domain” field.

For Windows ME:
The first time you connect with Windows ME, a dialog box will appear saying a little bit about dial up networking. You can select the box that says “Do not show this box again”. Next click one the close button located on the lower right of the box.

You will see the box disappear into the bottom right corner or your screen. There you will notice two little computers that look to be connected by a line. If you right-click on that icon, a menu will appear with one of the options being “Disconnect”. You can then click on disconnect to disconnect your computer from the network.

Once you are connected you can click once with the right mouse button on My Network Places select Map Network Drive. In the “Map Network Drive” box, in the field “Drive” select Y. Then in the field “Path”, enter the path \bumc.bu.edubumc. Also, make sure that the Reconnect at Logon field is checked. Finally click OK.

Note that a PPP connection by itself will only get you a TCP/IP network connection. In order to check your email on ACS, you need to either log in and run elm, pine or mail using a Telnet program such as Windows ME’s included Telnet client, or install and use Eudora for Windows. In order to surf the World Wide Web, you need to install and use a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. For more information on downloading or installing any of these programs, contact the Office of Information Technology Help Desk.
