Saving space on the Y drive and your own machine. Files to be archived (that need to be read later on) can be moved to CDs. This would allow you to have a departmental library of data files that do not need to be active (i.e. live and on the Y drive). These archived files could be accessed by reading the CD and returning it to the departmental library. Each CD can hold up to 650 Megs of data. One CD can hold up to 451 floppy disks.
