What is a wireless network?
A wireless network allows you to connect your computer to a network using radio waves instead of wires. As long as you are within range of a wireless access point, you can move your computer from place to place while maintaining untethered access to networked resources. The Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) wireless network conforms to the 802.11a and 802.11g standards and operates at 54 Mbps.
Is it secure?
All wireless transmissions are vulnerable unless they are encrypted. The Boston University wireless network is secured through strong encryption. If you would like to know more about our security methods, please read our wireless security page. Please note that no encryption is used when connecting with the BU Guest (unencrypted) or BU Wireless Help Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs).
What do I need to use the wireless network?
Any computer with a network card that supports current wireless standards should be able to associate with the wireless network, however access to the networks may require software installation or additional configuration.
Most devices can automatically detect the presence of these networks, so specifying the network name is not normally needed. If you need help configuring your computer to access the wireless, please see the instructions at http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/wireless/
What kinds of devices are supported on the wireless network?
We currently support Apple computers running OSX or later as well as support for most versions of Microsoft Windows.
