The recently released Apple iPhone 3G now permits connectivity to the BUMC Microsoft Exchange server and to the BUMC campus network. You can have your Exchange e-mail, contacts, and calendar pushed to your iPhone via ActiveSync.  You can also access other campus resources via the wireless campus network using the built-in Cisco VPN client.  

 

We are currently evaluating this new technology to determine if it will become one of our recommend handheld devices.

Using your iPhone on the BUMC wireless network

 

When you use the iPhone to connect to the BUMC wireless network, you need to connect using Virtual Private Network (VPN) software. See configuration directions below.

 

 If you do not need to connect to the BUMC wireless network from your iPhone, we recommend that you switch this feature off in order to preserve battery life. 

 

 

 

 Configuring your iPhone for Outlook/Exchange

 

1. From the home screen on your iPhone, select the Settings icon.

 

2. Scroll down and select Mail, Contacts, Calendars. 

3. On the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen, select Add Account…

4. Select Microsoft Exchange.

5. Under Email enter your full BU e-mail address (including the @bu.edu).

6. For Username enter: AD\your_BU_username

7. For Password enter: your_ BU_Kerberos_Password

8. Description can be left alone or you can call it what you wish.

9. When you are done, select Next at the upper right corner of the screen.

10. If you get an “Unable to Verify Certificate” error select Accept (you may have to do this twice).

11. You will see a Server field, immediately below the Email field. For Server enter: xmail.bumc.bu.edu

12. Select Next again.

 

 

 

 

 

Configuring VPN on the iPhone

 

 

1. From the home screen on your iPhone, select Settings.

2. Select General at the bottom of the screen.

3. Select Network.

4. From the Network screen, select VPN.

5. Select Add VPN Configuration.

6. Select IPSec (at the top, right of the screen).

7. For Description enter: BUMC

8. For Server enter: work2.bumc.bu.edu

9. In the Account field enter: your_bu_username

10. For Password enter: your_BU_Kerberos_password

11. Use Certificate should be set to OFF.

12. For Group Name enter: BUMC  (CaSe SeNSiTiVe)

13. For Secret enter: BUMC (also case sensitive)

14. Select Save at the upper right corner when you are done.
