Facilities Operations
The Facilities Operations division ensures efficiency in the day-to-day workings of the Medical Campus. They work to keep your areas functioning, clean, and well-manicured so that you may work in an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. There are several individual groups within this division.
Building Systems
This group maintains and operates the building systems including:
- heating
- ventilation
- air conditioning
- electrical work
- plumbing
- carpentry services
- locksmith services
The Building Systems group also works to maintain all the buildings’ structural components, such as walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs.
Custodial Services
This group provides general housekeeping and cleaning for common areas, interior space, classrooms, and departmental space within the Medical Campus. The work of this group includes:
- regular and “red-bag” trash removal
- floor cleaning
- dusting
- lamp replacement
- general cleaning
- pest control
- recycling
Also, special services, such as rug shampooing, floor stripping and waxing, interior window washing, and Venetian blind cleaning, are available. These special services may be requested by submitting a work request form and are scheduled based on demand and availability of staff.
Grounds
This group is a shared service with the Boston Medical Center, so it is responsible for maintaining the grounds for all of the Boston University Medical Center. The work of this group includes:
- lawn care
- shrub trimming
- plantings
- snow removal
- out-door trash removal
- litter
- leaf removal
Receiving
This group ensures the prompt and reliable delivery of packages for the Medical Campus. Unfortunately, individual departments are not permitted to use the main loading dock for shipments – please arrange for the carrier to deliver directly to your space.
Special Services
Both the grounds and custodial services groups handle any special service request which may include:
- office relocation
- equipment or furniture moving services
- furniture re-arrangent
These special services may be requested by submitting a work request form and are scheduled based on demand and availability of staff. If the job surpasses our in-house capabilities, the Office of Facilities Management will arrange for an outside contractor to complete the work.

Construction Services
The division of Construction Services creates new offices, laboratories, or campus utilities by either renovating existing space or orchestrating the erection of new buildings. Large-scale projects that require outside funding and contracted work are the primary ventures of Construction Services.
Most employees of the Medical Campus will not have much interaction with the members of the Construction Services division. However, if your area is re-designed or your office or lab is in one of the new buildings, Construction Services was the group that ensured comfortable furniture, strong construction, and effective use of space.
