Hyejung Park obtained her Ph.D degree in Biology in 2009 from Georgia Institute of Technology and her doctoral research has focused on elucidating the role of ceramide synthase in sphingolipid biosynthesis in the laboratory of Professor Alfred H. Merrill, Jr. Her dissertation is built upon this topic covering biochemical, developmental and cellular biology of sphingolipidomics in mammalian cells and tissues. She has also investigated applications of mass spectrometry to sphingolipid analysis, because mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for the characterization of lipid metabolites.
Hyejung Park is a post-doctoral fellow working for Professor Cathy Costello at BUCBM and focuses on structural elucidation of (glyco)sphingolipids in C.elegans that serve a multitude of important biological functions using LC-MS/MS. In addition, she is looking into sphingolipid research to investigate biological metabolisms related to human diseases, such as Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy Type I (HSN1), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and serine disorder diseases with collaborations.
