On Tuesday, February 23rd, the Rebecca Lee Crumpler Academy won the 1st annual Academies Volleyball Tournament defeating the Mary Jane Safford Academy in two sets, 21-18, 21-9 at the Solomon Carter Fuller Gym in the South End.

The best of 3 championship game was close, with Crumpler narrowly beating Safford by a score of 21-18 in the first match.  However, Crumpler was just getting warmed up and in the second match defeated Safford, 21-9, to secure the first Academies Volleyball Tournament title.

“The ‘Crumpinators’ were simply dominant this year,” said Dr. Todd Hoagland, Academy Advisor and member of the 2nd place Safford Academy squad.  “Their solid line up with the twin-towers-of-power were just too much for the other Academies.  Their masterful passing and crushing spikes left no doubt that they were the best team.”

The emerald-clad Crumpler squad was lead by MD/PhD student Patrick Mabray and 2nd year student Paul Phillips, and included 2nd year students Atisa Beihaghi (in her volleyball debut), Albert Do, Andrea Koploy, as well as 4th year Gretchen Struemph.  The championship match also held special meaning for Struemph as she faced off against her husband and Safford Academy player, Jonathan Struemph.

Crumpler Academy made it to the finals by defeating the Wilkins Academy, who despite playing with only five players, managed to hold their opponents to only a 7 point victory.  Safford Academy advanced to the finals by beating the deepest and most spirited team of the tournament, the Keefer Academy.  Despite falling short in the semi-finals, Keefer Academy, lead by Academy Advisor and Team Captain Dr. Douglas Hughes, boasted the highest number of student participants and advisors in attendance.  Drs. O’Bryan and Levine, also advisors in Keefer, were in attendance to cheer on their team.

As winners of the Academies Volleyball Tournament, the players and their entire Academy will receive a free breakfast buffet courtesy of the Academies Student Steering Committee and the Office of Student Affairs!
