Daly to head cardiothoracic surgery at BUMC
Benedict Daly, MD, director of the Center for Thoracic Oncology at BMC and professor of cardiothoracic surgery at BUSM, has been named chief of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at BMC and chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at BUSM.
Daly, who also is clinical director of general thoracic surgery at BMC, received his medical degree from BUSM in 1965 and completed his general and thoracic surgery residencies at the former Boston City Hospital. He served on the BUSM faculty until 1977.
Prior to his return to the BU Medical Campus in 2002, Daly was senior surgeon and director of lung tumor evaluation at New England Medical Center and professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. He also served as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center-Boston and director of cardiothoracic surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton.
“Dr. Daly brings a wealth of clinical experience to this role and we look forward to the leadership he will provide to the department of cardiothoracic surgery,” said Elaine Ullian, BMC president and CEO.
Daly’s research interests include the impact of induction high-dose radiation and concurrent chemotherapy on the survival, disease-free interval and patterns of recurrence in Stage III non-small cell lung cancer; and translational research to detect genes in primary tumors and lymph nodes responsible for predicting tumor spread, survival and resistance to chemotherapy.
“Dr. Daly is an outstanding academician who has been a leader in research and education,” said Karen Antman, MD, BUSM dean and provost of BU Medical Campus.
The recipient of numerous awards, Daly has authored or coauthored more than 200 papers and abstracts and served on numerous national and regional committees.
